Dustin Hines is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), where he conducts research on the role of glial cells in brain function and pathology. He directs the Hines Group Comprehensive Neuroscience Lab alongside his wife, Dr. Rochelle Hines.
Dr. Hines' research focuses on understanding how astrocytes and microglia cells interact with neurons under both normal conditions and in pathological states including depression, traumatic brain injury, stroke, and Alzheimer's disease. His work employs a multidisciplinary approach using molecular genetics, biochemistry, confocal and two-photon microscopy, electrophysiology, and behavioral assessments in mouse models.
His recent research has gained attention for investigating the potential therapeutic applications of psychedelic compounds for mental health treatment. Dr. Hines and his team have been studying how substances like psilocybin, LSD, and mescaline affect brain connectivity and could potentially treat conditions like depression and PTSD. Their studies have identified key hallmarks in the brain's response, showing that psychedelics may reestablish connections across multiple brain areas, effectively rewiring the brain.
Dr. Hines has received several awards for his mentorship, including the Graduate & Professional Student Association Outstanding Mentor Award in 2023 and the OUR Director's Mentor Award in 2017. His extensive publication record covers neuroscience, neuropharmacology, brain imaging, and the mechanisms of psychedelic compounds.
Dr. Hines earned his doctoral degree in neuroscience from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada (2009), followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA (2015). He is among the few researchers legally permitted to study Schedule 1 substances, having navigated a complex approval process through the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy and the Drug Enforcement Agency.
