Duo Chan is a Lecturer in Climate Sciences at the University of Southampton, School of Ocean and Earth Science. He holds a PhD from Harvard University and previously served as a Postdoctoral Scholar at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. His research focuses on developing statistical and physical tools to understand climate mechanisms and improve climate projections.
Key research interests include climate data analysis, machine learning applications in environmental studies, climate variability, and air-sea/land-air interactions. He leads the DCENT project, producing a dynamically consistent ensemble of historical temperature datasets. Chan’s work has been published in top journals like Nature, Science Advances, and the Journal of Climate, with media coverage from NPR and Science.
He is actively recruiting PhD students with backgrounds in mathematics, physics, or environmental sciences. Chan’s research group collaborates on topics such as ocean heat uptake, hurricane genesis modeling, and climate adaptation strategies.
