Dr. Duncan Robert Cowan is an Adjunct Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia's School of Earth and Oceans. He holds a B.Sc. Hons in Geology (1963) and a Ph.D. in Scandinavian Caledonides (1966) from the University of Nottingham. With over 55 years of global experience in exploration geophysics and geology, his work spans projects in Finland, Australia, Canada, Brazil, Botswana, Mauritania, and Tanzania. His expertise includes interpreting magnetic, gravity, electromagnetic, and radiometric data using advanced computer techniques for dataset integration.
Research focuses on kimberlites, lamproites, potential field data inversion, and the Limpopo Mobile Belt in Southern Africa. He previously lectured at the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College, London (1978–1989). Professional affiliations include the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers, and the International Association for Mathematical Geology.
