Duane D. Winkler is an Associate Professor in Biological Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), affiliated with the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. He holds a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Texas Health Science Center (2009) and a BS in Biochemistry & Genetics from Texas A&M University (2003). As Associate Head of the Biological Sciences department, he leads academic and administrative operations.
His research focuses on structural and biochemical mechanisms of metalloenzymes, particularly SOD1 (superoxide dismutase) maturation pathways and interactions with copper chaperones like CCS1. He also investigates Bacillus thuringiensis Cry1Ab toxin-receptor interactions via cadherin GPCRs, with implications for insecticide design. Techniques employed include X-ray crystallography and biophysical characterization.
Recent publications highlight SOD1 activation via sulfenic acid intermediates, copper source dynamics in metallation, and structural biology of toxin-receptor complexes. His work bridges biochemistry, structural biology, and biophysics to address fundamental biological questions with translational applications in disease (e.g., ALS) and pest control.
Current projects include:
- Molecular Mechanisms of SOD1 Maturation Processes
- Structure-function Based Rational Design of Insecticide(s)
