Mehmet Candas

Mehmet Candas is a Professor in the Biological Sciences Department at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), affiliated with the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. He holds a PhD in Molecular Biology and Genetics from Southern Methodist University (1995), and MS/BS degrees in Biochemistry from Middle East Technical University (Turkey). His research focuses on metabolic pathways, microbial virulence, and cell signaling mechanisms, particularly involving bacterial toxins and host-pathogen interactions. He has spearheaded projects on antimicrobial development, proteomics, and bioinformatics applications in biotechnology.

Recent studies emphasize targeting bacterial metabolism for anti-infective therapies and understanding gut microbiota interactions.

Projects: He led initiatives such as Targeting Phenotypic Adaptation for Antimicrobial Development (2004–2020) and developed bioinformatics frameworks for genomic studies. His lab’s work has contributed to understanding insect resistance to biopesticides and bacterial biofilm formation.

Teaching: Candas teaches courses in biochemistry, cellular microbiology, and biotechnology, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches. He advocates for active learning and genomics education in undergraduate curricula.
