Dr. Duane Barker is a Professor in the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture at Vancouver Island University (VIU), where he has worked since 2005. He combines over 25 years of aquatic animal health research experience with extensive university teaching expertise across four institutions.
- Education: PhD in Biology from Dalhousie University (1997), MSc in Biology from Memorial University of Newfoundland (1993), BSc in Marine Biology from Memorial University of Newfoundland (1990).
His research spans three primary areas:
- Population and Ecosystem Assessment focusing on environmental monitoring, ecotoxicology of industrial contaminants, and biodiversity analysis.
- Fisheries Biology examining parasite community ecology and fish migration patterns.
- Aquatic Animal Health investigating sea lice as pathogen vectors and evaluating aquaculture therapeutants.
Recent publications highlight his work on chemical toxicity assessments, pathogen transmission dynamics, and aquaculture treatment efficacy. He has supervised over 100 students at all academic levels and received the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation Research Chair in 2015 for his aquaculture research.
