Dritan Agalliu is an Associate Professor of Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He is also a CTNI Scholar and affiliated with societies like the Society for Neuroscience and the International Brain Barriers Society.
- PhD in Genetics and Development (2006, Columbia University)
- Postdoctoral training at Stanford University (2011)
Research focuses on blood-brain barrier (BBB) mechanisms in CNS diseases like stroke and autoimmune disorders. His lab uses genetic, molecular, and imaging tools to study BBB tight junctions, caveolae, and Wnt/β-catenin signaling for barrier repair. They also investigate immune cell entry in psychiatric disorder models post-Streptococcus infections.
Recent publications emphasize BBB dynamics in 2024-2023, including studies on Norrin/β-catenin in retinal barriers and VEGF-A-driven neuroinflammatory angiogenesis. Earlier work (2016-2021) explores Th17 cell mechanisms, extracellular vesicles in BBB disruption, and Wnt signaling in CNS repair.
Scientific accolades include the 2020 Lamport Award, 2016 PANDAS Network Innovator, and distinctions in his 2006 PhD and 1998 B.S.
