Dr. David M. Baneke is an Associate Professor in the History and Philosophy of Science at Utrecht University, affiliated with the Freudenthal Institute. He holds a tenured position since 2014 and serves as Programme Coordinator of the Master’s programme in History and Philosophy of Science. His research focuses on the cultural and political contexts of modern science, including the history of weather forecasting, astronomy, and international scientific collaboration. He has authored influential books like Synthetisch Denken (2008) and De Ontdekkers van de Hemel (2015), which received accolades such as the Teylers Gold Medal (2009).
His research themes include the societal expectations of science, the role of experts in modernity, and the interplay between science education and policy. He has supervised numerous master’s theses and co-supervised PhD projects on topics like European scientific collaboration and satellite infrastructure perceptions. Baneke’s work bridges historical analysis with contemporary debates, emphasizing how scientific predictions gain public trust and how cultural narratives shape scientific endeavors.
He has held visiting positions at institutions like Imperial College London and the National Air and Space Museum.
