Professor Douwe Van Sinderen is affiliated with the School of Microbiology at University College Cork and serves as a Principal Investigator at the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC). His academic career, supported by Science Foundation Ireland Investigator Awards since 2003, focuses on comparative genomics and molecular biology of bacteriophages infecting lactic acid bacteria (Lactococcus lactis, Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus) and bifidobacterial genomics in gut health, nutrition, and disease.
His research explores antimicrobial activities from LAB, gene regulation in Gram-positive bacteria, and bacteriophage resistance mechanisms. Funded by over €11M from national (SFI, IRC, DAFF) and EU grants, his work spans functional genomics, food preservation, and host-microbe interactions. Recent studies highlight phage-host co-evolution, CRISPR-Cas applications, and vitamin biosynthesis by gut microbes.
