Douglas Walton is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Windsor, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. He is a leading figure in argumentation theory, informal logic, and computational models of reasoning. He co-founded the Centre for Research in Reasoning, Argumentation and Rhetoric (CRRAR) and has contributed extensively to the development of formal dialogue models, argumentation schemes, and AI tools for practical reasoning. His work bridges philosophy, linguistics, law, and computer science, with a focus on understanding how arguments function in real-world contexts.
Walton's research explores dialectical relevance, burden of proof, and the application of argumentation frameworks to legal interpretation, ethical deliberation, and artificial intelligence. He has authored over 30 books and numerous articles, including seminal works on fallacies, practical reasoning, and the Carneades argumentation system. His contributions have advanced methodologies for annotating argument schemes, analyzing cross-examination dialogues, and evaluating expert opinion evidence.
Walton's lectures frequently address public audiences, emphasizing tools for detecting fallacious reasoning and improving deliberative processes. His interdisciplinary approach integrates theoretical rigor with practical applications in education, healthcare, and legal practice.
