Douglas Steigerwald

Douglas Steigerwald is Professor of Economics at University of California, Santa Barbara, with courtesy appointment in Statistics. He develops econometric methods for interdisciplinary problems across economics, computer science, geography, and environmental science.

Education includes BA from Pomona College and PhD from UC Berkeley specializing in semiparametric estimators. Directed AEA's Summer Training Program and chaired NSF's Economics Graduate Research Fellowship Program.

Research focuses on detecting latent events like macroeconomic regimes using likelihood ratio tests with Gaussian processes, analyzing clustered data significance, and applied projects including water recycling benefits assessment. Methodological work addresses statistical challenges in near-population datasets and heterogeneous treatment effects.

Published in top journals including Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Cleaner Production, and Economic Geography. Applied research examines Mexican maize markets, journal subscription valuation, and water conservation policies.
