Douglas Routh is an Assistant Professor (Lecturer) in the Department of Sociology at the University of Utah and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Obstetrics & Gynecology. He holds a PhD in Criminal Justice & Criminology (2018), an MA in Criminal Justice (2012), and dual bachelor’s degrees in Criminal Justice (2011) and Psychology (2010), all from Washington State University. His research focuses on corrections, including risk-needs assessment tools, population management strategies, and interdisciplinary approaches linking healthcare, technology, and criminal justice. Notably, he has explored barriers to healthcare access for justice-involved populations via telehealth and technology-based interventions.
His scholarly work has been published in journals such as Justice Quarterly, Health & Justice, and Criminal Justice & Behavior. He has authored technical reports for correctional treatment programs, family and drug court initiatives, and re-entry services. Routh has also worked in the software industry, applying research to state Department of Corrections systems. His teaching activities include courses on Corrections, Deviant Behavior/Social Control, and Introduction to Criminal Justice.
Routh’s research integrates implementation science, public health, and criminal justice to address systemic gaps in service provision. Recent projects emphasize contraceptive care access for incarcerated individuals and the validity of risk assessment tools in corrections. His work often bridges policy, practice, and empirical evidence to drive systemic improvements.
