Douglas N. Savin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. As a physical therapist and researcher, he focuses on motor control, balance, and gait adaptation in older adults and stroke survivors. His work explores neuromuscular mechanisms underlying balance impairments, somatosensory awareness, and attention during postural responses.
Education:
- Bachelor's in Mass Communication and Music, Towson University
- Master's in Physical Therapy (MPT), University of Maryland, Baltimore
- PhD in Physical Rehabilitation Science, University of Maryland, Baltimore
Dr. Savin's research investigates interventions to reduce fall risk in older adults through balance training and examines error-based motor adaptation during walking in stroke patients. Recent studies highlighted his contributions to understanding protective balance responses during sudden perturbations and aging-related changes in motor prediction.
Scientific Awards:
- UMB Alumnus of the Year (2014)
- UMB Faculty of the Year Award (2016, 2019)
- Ruth L. Kirschstein T32 Fellowship (2005-2008)
- VA Pre-Doctoral Fellowship (2009-2010)
- OAIC Research Career Development Scholar (2011-2014)
- OAIC Pilot Study Award (2012-2016)
He currently serves as Director of Student Affairs for the Doctor of Physical Therapy program, focusing on resilience and grit in graduate education. His teaching portfolio includes neuromotor control, neuroscience, and neuroanatomy courses.
