Douglas Kent is an author, activist, and educator specializing in ecological land management. He holds dual master’s degrees in Regenerative Studies and Landscape Architecture from Cal Poly Pomona. Currently, he serves as a Lecturer at the University of Southern California’s School of Architecture and teaches at the John Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies at Cal Poly Pomona. His work spans over 40 years, focusing on fire-resistant landscaping, urban ecological strategies, and sustainable land management practices.
Key publications include Firescaping: Protecting Your Home with a Fire-Resistant Landscape (2019, 2nd Ed.), Foraging Southern California (2019), and Ocean Friendly Gardens (2009). His designs and projects have been featured in Fine Gardening, Sunset Magazine, and CNN, among others. Kent’s courses, such as Advanced Topics in Urban Ecology, examine global environmental challenges and landscape architectural solutions.
He actively collaborates with organizations like the Surfrider Foundation and has contributed over 50 articles to media outlets including the Los Angeles Times and CoastKeeper Magazine. His research emphasizes mitigating climate impacts through landscape interventions, such as sea-level rise adaptation and habitat restoration.
