Professor Douglas D. Frey is a faculty member in the Department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). He holds the rank of Professor and leads the Frey Biopolymer Separation Laboratory. His research focuses on thermodynamic and biophysical principles underlying separation processes for biological macromolecules, including proteins, peptides, polynucleotides, and viruses. Key application areas include pharmaceutical purification, proteomic analysis, biomedical diagnostics, and viral clearance. He has pioneered advancements in chromatofocusing, mixed-mode chromatography, and carbon nanotube sorting.
Professor Frey teaches advanced courses such as Transport Phenomena (ENCH 630), Heat and Mass Transfer (ENCH 427), and Biochemical Engineering Laboratory (ENCH 485L). His consulting work spans chromatographic process development and ion-exchange technology optimization for industry. He has developed open-source software tools for chromatography modeling and contributed to patents in microscale bioprocessing systems.
His research interests include computational modeling of separation processes, novel column packing methods, and high-throughput bioreactor systems for on-demand therapeutic production. Collaborative projects involve interdisciplinary teams addressing challenges in bioseparations and nanotechnology.
