Dr. Douglas C. Schmidt serves as the Cornelius Vanderbilt Professor of Computer Science at Vanderbilt University, concurrently holding key administrative roles including Associate Provost for Research Development and Technologies and Co-Chair of the Data Science Institute. His research affiliations span the Institute for Software Integrated Systems (ISIS) at Vanderbilt and the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University, where he holds a Visiting Scientist position.
His research program centers on software engineering for distributed real-time embedded (DRE) systems and mobile cloud computing, with emphasis on developing patterns, optimization techniques, and empirical methodologies for model-driven engineering tools and mission-critical middleware frameworks. This work addresses reliability and performance challenges in demanding computational environments through rigorous framework analysis and tool development.
With an extensive publication record exceeding 650 technical papers and books, Dr. Schmidt has mentored over 40 Ph.D. and Masters students to graduation. His leadership within the Institute for Software Integrated Systems and Data Science Institute drives interdisciplinary research at the forefront of computing systems development and deployment.
