Dr. Barthold's research focuses on the intersection of health policies, chronic disease management, and cognition across the lifespan. His work examines how health policies influence the management of mid-life risk factors for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), as well as the value of care for conditions that influence healthy aging. His expertise spans health economics, health policy, pharmacoepidemiology, and pharmaceutical outcomes research, with particular emphasis on medication adherence, drug policy, and economic evaluation of healthcare interventions.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on health economics and outcomes research across multiple domains including HIV treatment preferences, diabetes management, dementia care, and bariatric surgery outcomes. His work frequently employs real-world data methods and discrete choice experiments to understand patient and provider decision-making. A significant portion of his research examines how health insurance design and prescription drug costs impact healthcare utilization and outcomes, particularly for older adults and those with chronic conditions.
