معرفی
Douglas Allan is a Professor at the University of British Columbia within the Faculty of Medicine and Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences. He leads research projects in Cell and Developmental Biology and Neuroscience programs.
- Postdoc: Harvard Medical School (2000-2005)
- PhD: University of Alberta (1994-2000)
- MSc & BSc (Hon): Aberdeen University, Scotland (1992-93 & 1988-1992)
His research focuses on gene regulation in neurons through transcriptional mechanisms controlling neuronal identity and synaptic function. Key projects include:
- Retrograde BMP signaling at neuromuscular junctions
- Clinical interpretation of human gene variants using Drosophila models
- Sexual dimorphism in neuronal populations
- Maintenance of transcription factor networks in mature neurons
- Neurodegenerative disorder mechanisms (Alzheimer's, Huntington's)
- Chondrogenesis in mammalian models
Recent publications show expertise in genomics, developmental signaling, and translational neuroscience with applications to cancer genetics and autism research.
Awards received include
- Tula Foundation Investigator (Brain Research Centre)
- CIHR New Investigator
- MSFHR Scholar
- EJLB Scholar
As lab director at the Life Sciences Institute, he supervises graduate students in projects spanning neurodevelopmental disorders, synaptic homeostasis, and protein toxicity mechanisms in neurodegenerative diseases. His work demonstrates Drosophila's utility for clinical variant interpretation and translational research.
