Dougal McKenzie is a Lecturer in Painting at Ulster University's Belfast School of Art, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences. He has co-directed the BA Fine Art program (2015-19, 2021-23) and supervised PhDs to completion.
- Co-director of Catalyst Arts (1994-96)
- Previously lectured at Limerick School of Art and Design (1997-2004) and SRC Newry and Armagh (2004-11)
- Studio member at Queen Street Studios, Orchid Studios, and Paragon Studios
His research explores the interplay between painting, film, and performance, with a focus on narrative theory, historiography, and visual culture. Recent publications and exhibitions (2017-2019) emphasize contemporary painting practices, urban art, and conceptual storytelling.
Key scientific awards include:
- Prize winner at Liverpool John Moores Painting Exhibition (2004)
- Arts Council of Northern Ireland Major Individual Award (2005)
- Shortlisted for MAC International (2014) and Contemporary British Painting Prize (2024)

He has supervised PhD students Susan Connolly (2019) and David Haughey (2021). Current roles include co-director of the BA (Hons) Fine Art program and board member at PS2 Gallery, Belfast.
