Doug VanderLaan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Toronto Mississauga and a Collaborator Scientist in Child and Youth Psychiatry at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. His research focuses on gender expression, sexual orientation development, and psychological well-being among sexual and gender minority groups, integrating biological, cultural, and developmental perspectives.
- Education: B.A. (Hon.) from McMaster University, M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Lethbridge.
Dr. VanderLaan’s work examines within-sex variation in sexual orientation and gender nonconformity, utilizing cross-cultural, evolutionary, and clinical approaches. His lab employs diverse methodologies such as neuroimaging, behavioral observation, and clinical research to address questions about gender diversity and mental health.
He co-edited the book Gender and Sexuality Development: Contemporary Theory and Research, which synthesizes interdisciplinary perspectives (biological, cognitive, social, cultural) to explore gender and sexuality development. The book serves as a resource for researchers, clinicians, and policymakers.
