Doug Trick is an Associate Professor of Linguistics at Trinity Western University (TWU), affiliated with the Applied Linguistics Department in the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences. He currently oversees five degree programs at the Canada Institute of Linguistics (CanIL) and teaches courses on translation principles, philosophical linguistics, and language program design. His career includes 25 years of service in Philippine Bible translation, sociolinguistic research, and lexicography consulting.
Education:
- Doctor of Ministry in Bible Translation (Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, 2013)
- MA in Linguistics (University of Texas at Arlington, 1980)
- Bachelor of Religious Education (Providence College, 1977)
Research focuses on Bible translation methodology, semantic theory, and Philippine languages like Tagalog and Southern Sinama. His work bridges theological interpretation with practical translation challenges faced by minority language communities. Recent publications explore translation success metrics and philosophical foundations of linguistic communication.
Administrative roles include Program Chair for Master of Applied Linguistics & Exegesis (2012-2017) and leadership in SIL Philippines. Active in both academic teaching and fieldwork, he continues contributing to language projects in the Philippines while mentoring 5 translation consultants through TWU's MA program.
