Douglas "Doc" Goodwin is a Ruth W. Molette Professor and Chair in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Auburn University, within the College of Sciences and Mathematics. He earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Utah State University (1996) and a B.A. in Nutrition from the University of Northern Colorado (1991). Prior to his current role, he held positions as Professor (2019–2020), Associate Professor (2005–2019), and Assistant Professor (1999–2005) at Auburn. His research focuses on heme-dependent enzymes, particularly catalase-peroxidases (KatG), exploring their structure-function relationships and roles in bacterial virulence, antibiotic resistance, and drug development targeting pathogens like Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Yersinia pestis. He also contributes to STEM education through programs like the Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project.
