Dost Öngür serves as the William P. and Henry B. Test Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Chief of the Division of Psychotic Disorders at McLean Hospital, directing the Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder Research Program and LEAP Center. His leadership encompasses three inpatient units, a residential facility, PACT team, specialty clinics, and community support programs.
His educational trajectory includes:
- BA from Oberlin College (1992)
- MS in Neuroscience from Yale University (1994)
- MD/PhD from Washington University, St. Louis (2000)
- Medicine Internship at Massachusetts General Hospital/Mt. Auburn Hospital (2000-2001)
- Psychiatry Residency at Massachusetts General Hospital/McLean Hospital (2001-2004)
Dr. Öngür's research integrates clinical psychiatry with neuroscience to investigate brain abnormalities in psychotic disorders. His laboratory employs fMRI, MRS, genetics, and computational modeling to study cortical network disruptions, bioenergetic deficits, and neurotransmitter imbalances in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. This translational work drives development of novel interventions including cognitive training programs and early psychosis strategies.
Analysis of his publication record reveals consistent focus on neuroimaging biomarkers for psychotic disorders, with emphasis on structural/functional brain alterations measurable through MRI/MRS techniques. His work identifies specific network disruptions (particularly frontoparietal executive control networks), metabolic impairments (22% reduced ATP synthesis in schizophrenia), and neurotransmitter abnormalities that correlate with clinical symptoms.
His teaching excellence is recognized through multiple institutional awards:
- Teaching Award from McLean Hospital
- Teaching Award from Partners HealthCare (Mass General Brigham)
- Teaching Award from Harvard Medical School
- Mentoring Award from McLean Hospital
- Mentoring Award from Partners HealthCare (Mass General Brigham)
- Mentoring Award from Harvard Medical School
As editor of JAMA Psychiatry and principal investigator of NIMH-funded grants, Dr. Öngür mentors medical students and residents while leading the EPINET collaboration with Massachusetts Department of Mental Health to standardize early psychosis care. His research program secures substantial federal funding for longitudinal studies of treatment response.
The Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder Research Program (founded 2006) now operates as the LEAP Center, coordinating multidisciplinary teams across McLean Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and academic partners to collect standardized clinical data and develop AI-driven prediction models for psychosis outcomes.
