Dorothy Balancio is a full Professor and Program Director in Sociology at Mercy University's School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. She holds advanced degrees including a Ph.D. in Sociology, Masters of Philosophy, Pedagogy, and NYS Elementary Education Certification. Her work spans conflict resolution, negotiation, and sociological pedagogy, with a focus on integrating theory and practice.
Education: M.A. & Ph.D. in Sociology; Masters of Philosophy; Masters of Pedagogy; NYS Teaching License (Elementary Education). Postdoctoral certifications include Conflict Resolution (IMCR), Family Life Course Education (NCFR), and Career Management (LHH).
Research focuses on sociological applications in education, trust-building, and mediation. Her textbook Managing Conflict: An Introspective Journey to Negotiation Skills (2018) reflects her expertise. She has presented at the International Conference on Social Values in Oxford.
Leadership roles include Director of the Verrazzano Institute (1990–1995) and Executive Director of the Louis Balancio Scholarship Fund, dedicated to conflict resolution education. Awards include peer-recognized teaching excellence.
Teaching emphasizes emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and societal navigation. She mentors faculty and advises on curriculum development for 35+ staff annually. Her work integrates personal trauma into pedagogy, prioritizing trust and ethical decision-making.
