Doris Behrens-Abouseif

Professor Doris Behrens-Abouseif is currently the Nasser D Khalili Professor of Islamic Art & Archaeology at SOAS, University of London since 2000. Previously, she held positions as Privatdozentin (Adjunct Professor) at the University of Munich from 1994/1995 to 2000 and taught Islamic Art and Architecture at the American University in Cairo from 1980 to 1985. She earned her PhD (Dr.phil.) in 1972 from the University of Hamburg, focusing on "The Copts in Egyptian Society between the Middle of the 19th Century and 1923".

Her research interests include the History of Islamic Art and Islamic Archaeology, with a notable focus on Coptic history in modern Egypt. She has been recognized with the Creswell Award from the American University in Cairo (1981) and became a Member of the Academia Europaea in 2006. She actively contributes to academic publishing through editorial roles at the Mamluk Studies Review (Chicago) and Mamlukische Beiträge (University of Bonn).
