Dorie Millerson is a Tenured Associate Professor in the Material Art & Design program of the Faculty of Design at OCAD University, where she has taught since 2005. Her practice bridges artistic creation and academic research in textile-based disciplines, with internationally exhibited work featured in major publications and collections.
Education:
- MFA in Textiles, NSCAD University (2003)
- BA (Honours) in Fibre, Ontario College of Art & Design (2000)
Millerson's research centers on the metaphorical and physical dimensions of mending in textiles, investigating time, memory, and loss through techniques like lace-making and shadow play. She is a leading scholar in craft theory and history, with pioneering work on digital craft integration in pedagogy. Her expertise spans textile arts, craft history, and drawing, examining how traditional techniques intersect with contemporary digital practices to reshape material culture.
Scientific Awards:
- Community Outreach Award from the Ontario Association of Art Galleries (2008)
Millerson supervises graduate students (MA, MDes, MFA) across craft disciplines including textiles, ceramics, furniture, and fashion, as well as craft history and curation. She secured significant research funding through a SSHRC grant (2019-2022) for the national collaborative project "Thinking through craft and the digital turn," which evolved from her foundational 2017 research initiative "Craft Pedagogy and the Digital Challenge" developed with Dr. Lynne Heller. Her work addresses critical gaps in digital craft education within higher education institutions.
