Doreen Montag

Dr. Doreen Montag is a Senior Lecturer in Global Public Health at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), affiliated with the Wolfson Institute of Population Health and the Centre for Public Health & Policy. She holds a Magister Atrium in Altamerikanistik from the Free University Berlin and a DPhil in Anthropology from Oxford University. Her academic journey includes roles at the Australian National University, Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar, and a DAAD fellowship at Free University Berlin. At QMUL, she coordinated the MSc/MRes Global Public Health programs (2016-2019) and developed teaching modules in Climate Change & Health Policy, Ecological Global Health, and Planetary Health. She co-leads the Queen Mary Latin American Network (QMLAN) and serves on QMUL’s Environment and Health Steering Group. Additionally, she is an Honorary Extraordinary Professor at Peru’s Universidad Nacional Intercultural de la Amazonia (UNIA) and an Associate Research Fellow at UNU-CRIS, focusing on Amazonian regional health policy.

Her research integrates planetary health, climate change, and biodiversity conservation, with a focus on Peru and the Amazon basin. Notable projects include the MRC-funded ARPEC cohort studying childhood anaemia and eco-bio-social factors, and studies on Indigenous health in the Peruvian Amazon during the pandemic. She explores gut microbiota’s role in health within the Anthropocene context.

Dr. Montag’s work bridges academia and policy, emphasizing marginalized communities’ health needs. She has supervised PhD candidates like Vidhya Sasitharan on pesticide poisoning in farming systems and collaborates internationally on health policy adaptations to climate change.
