Doran Larson is the Edward North Chair of Greek and Greek Literature and Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at Hamilton College. He has been a faculty member since 1998, focusing on prison writing, witness literature, and the history of the novel. His work includes organizing college programs in New York State prisons and teaching creative writing at Attica State Prison from 2006 to 2016.
He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from SUNY Buffalo and a B.A. from UC Santa Cruz. His research explores prison writing, witness narratives, and the intersection of literature with legal and social justice issues. He has published extensively on prison literature, including Fourth City: Essays from the Prison in America and Witness in the Era of Mass Incarceration.
His articles and essays have appeared in College Literature, The Atlantic Monthly, and The Washington Post. Notable grants include National Endowment for the Humanities support for his prison writing archive project and Sunshine Lady Foundation funding for prison education initiatives.
Larson has received numerous awards, including the Samuel and Helen Lang Excellence in Teaching Award and Pushcart Prize nominations for his short stories. His creative works include novels like Marginalia and The Big Deal, alongside short stories and screenwriting analyses.
He has advised and supported students through Hamilton College grants and fellowships, while his advocacy extends to prison reform through collaborative teaching projects and literary initiatives.
