معرفی
Dook van Mechelen is an Associate Professor at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Department of Electrical Engineering. He leads the Advanced Sensing & Quantum Materials (ASQ) cluster of the Signal Processing Systems (SPS) group and maintains affiliations with multiple research centers including EAISI, Center for Care & Cure Technology Eindhoven, Center for Wireless Technology Eindhoven, and Center for Terahertz Science and Technology Eindhoven.
His research focuses on developing novel sensing concepts that bridge fundamental research in condensed matter physics and photonics with physics-based signal processing for practical applications in security, agriculture, and industrial settings. His expertise spans optical spectroscopy (particularly in the THz range), industrial sensor development, and condensed matter physics, with emphasis on creating sensor concepts for the autonomous world that combine smart signal processing with advanced technologies.
Dr. van Mechelen's academic background includes:
- M.Sc. in Physics (with honors) from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (2005)
- PhD in experimental Condensed Matter Physics from the University of Geneva, Switzerland (2010)
Prior to joining TU/e in September 2020, he worked at ABB Corporate Research in Switzerland from 2011 to 2020, where he matured THz spectroscopy for sensing applications. His teaching responsibilities include 'Fundamentals of machine learning' at the university level.
His publication record demonstrates consistent research output with interdisciplinary applications. His work shows a clear trajectory from fundamental physics research toward practical implementation in agriculture (coffee bean sorting, leaf wetness detection) and industrial applications. The integration of physics-based understanding with machine learning techniques represents a distinctive approach in his recent work.
His research has resulted in publications in high-impact venues including Nature Communications and Scientific Reports, with practical demonstrations of terahertz technology's potential across multiple sectors.
