Dr. Donna Wakefield is an Associate Professor in the Department of Special Education at the National College of Education, National Louis University. She joined the faculty in 2000 and specializes in assistive technology, language literacy, and the portrayal of disability in children’s and young adult literature. Her work emphasizes inclusive education strategies and adaptive technologies for students with exceptional learning needs.
Education: PhD in Special Education (University of Illinois at Chicago, 2005), M.A. in Speech Pathology (Ball State University, 1981), B.S. in Communication Disorders (Northern Illinois University, 1977), and an Assistive Technology Applications Certificate (California State University, 2000).
Research Interests: Dr. Wakefield’s research focuses on assistive technologies (e.g., iPads) for students with disabilities and the representation of disability in literature. She advocates for accessibility in literacy tools and has presented widely on topics such as book apps for classroom use and inclusive curricula.
