Dr. Donna J. Nelson is a Professor at the University of Oklahoma's Department of Chemistry and a Visiting Professor at MIT during 2010-2011 and 2024-2025. Her academic career includes roles such as Chancellor's Diversity Scholar at UC San Diego (2008) and visiting positions at Rice University (2007). She holds a PhD from UT-Austin (advisor: Michael Dewar) and a postdoctorate under H.C. Brown at Purdue University.
Her research focuses on fentanyl crisis analysis, single-walled carbon nanotube functionalization, and scientific workforce development. She pioneered teaching methodologies emphasizing student engagement and accessibility. As science advisor for Breaking Bad, she bridged entertainment and chemistry education.
