Donna Halperin is a Professor at the Rankin School of Nursing, St. Francis Xavier University, and Associate Director of the Health Policy and Translation Group at the Canadian Center for Vaccinology. She holds a BScN (1993, StFX), MSc (1998, Syracuse University), PhD (2005, University of Calgary), and a post-doctoral fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases (Dalhousie University). Her research focuses on vaccine program implementation, health policy, and public health decision-making, with expertise in mixed methods, survey research, and grounded theory.
Dr. Halperin’s work includes evaluating vaccination policies, maternal immunization strategies, and the role of alternative healthcare providers (e.g., pharmacists) in vaccine delivery. She has led/co-investigated over $30 million in grants from CIHR, industry partners, and foundations, including studies on meningococcal B outbreaks, influenza policies, and rotavirus vaccination programs. Her research bridges clinical practice, policy, and community engagement, emphasizing equity and evidence-based healthcare.
Key achievements include co-leading the Canadian Immunization Research Network (CIRN) and the Public Health Agency of Canada’s influenza research initiatives. She has published extensively on vaccination coverage, healthcare provider behavior, and maternal immunization barriers. Her contributions address gaps in public health policy and practice across Canada, with a focus on Indigenous communities and marginalized populations.
