Dr. Dongchang Chen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of New Mexico (UNM). His research focuses on advancing materials chemistry for energy storage and conversion, particularly in developing low-cost, high-performance battery materials using electrochemical and spectroscopic methods. He holds a B.S. in Chemical Physics from the University of Science and Technology of China (2011), a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Georgia Institute of Technology (2017), and completed postdoctoral research at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (2017-2020).
His work emphasizes cation-disordered rock-salt cathodes for lithium-ion batteries, exploring their structural dynamics and electrochemical behavior. Key research tools include operando spectroscopy and advanced characterization techniques to elucidate energy storage mechanisms. Notable awards include the UNM RAC Award, UNM WeR1 Faculty Success Award, and the Charles Hatchett Award from the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (UK).
Dr. Chen’s lab investigates fluorination effects, surface stability, and metastable material synthesis to enhance battery performance. His recent publications (2021-2025) highlight advancements in cation-disordered electrode materials, electrochromic polymers, and mechanistic insights into energy storage systems. The research bridges fundamental materials science with practical applications in sustainable energy technologies.
