Prof. Dong Ruan is the Department Chair of Mechanical and Product Design Engineering at Swinburne University of Technology's School of Engineering. She holds a PhD from Swinburne (2005) and prior degrees from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Her research focuses on additive manufacturing of fiber-reinforced composites, dynamic material behavior, and structural crashworthiness. She has authored over 280 papers with >10,000 citations and secured $40M+ in research grants from ARC and industry partners. Awards include the 2022 Michell Medal and 2013 Eureka Prize. She leads editorial roles for Engineering Structures, Thin-Walled Structures, and International Journal of Impact Engineering. Recent projects involve metamaterials, 3D-printed auxetic structures, and safety roller barrier optimization. Active in PhD supervision (over 40 students) and collaborative industry projects.
