Dong Jintang

Dong Jintang is a Chair Professor and Head of the Department of Human Cell Biology and Genetics at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) School of Medicine. He earned a BS in Biology from Nankai University (1984) and a PhD in Pathophysiology from Peking Union Medical College and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (1989). His postdoctoral training at NIH and Johns Hopkins focused on molecular cancer biology and prostate cancer. He held academic positions at the University of Virginia (1996-2001), Emory University (2002-2018), and Nankai University (2006-2018 as Adjunct Professor). Since 2018, he has led SUSTech's School of Medicine research team.

His research centers on molecular pathogenesis of human cancers, particularly prostate cancer progression. Using genetic, biochemical, and molecular approaches, he investigates oncogenes like KAI1, PTEN, and transcription factors (KLF5, ATBF1) in tumor development, metastasis, and therapeutic resistance. He has contributed to epigenetic mechanisms in breast cancer and identified novel tumor suppressors such as snoRNA U50.

His publications (over 120 peer-reviewed articles, including in Science, Nature Genetics, and Nature Communications) reveal frequent themes in prostate cancer mutations, KLF5/WWP1 oncogenic interactions, and hormone-dependent tumor regulation. Recent work explores SUMOylation of ZFHX3 in liver cancer and KLF5's dual role in epithelial homeostasis versus oncogenesis.

Scientific awards include the Georgia Cancer Alliance's Outstanding Doctor and Scientist Award, Yangtze River Scholar Specially Appointed Professor status, and National Thousand Talents Plan recognition. He has trained over 30 doctoral students and postdocs, served on editorial boards of journals like Journal of Genetics and Genomics, and led NIH-funded projects. His lab at SUSTech investigates molecular targets for cancer diagnostics and therapeutics.
