Donald Scott Stinson is a Lecturer of Music at the Frost School of Music, University of Miami. He teaches composition, orchestration, counterpoint, and music theory, while actively contributing to contemporary classical music through innovative compositions.
- Education: Graduate of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, mentored by microtonalist pioneer John Eaton.
His research explores Arabic influences on Western musical culture and the effects of modern electronic media on cognition. Stinson’s compositions include works for wind ensemble, chorus, and multi-percussion, with recent premieres at Florida International University (2016) and McGill University (2017). He emphasizes technical experimentation, such as microtonal and extended instrumental techniques.
Stinson’s students, including Steve Danyew and Paul Mortilla, have achieved recognition like BMI Foundation awards. His creative philosophy centers on transmitting legacy knowledge from masters like Joseph Gingolds and Janos Starkers. Outside academia, he engages with chess, board games, and historical biographies of English monarchs.
