Donald P. Gaver is the Alden J. 'Doc' Laborde Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Tulane University, affiliated with the School of Science & Engineering. He teaches courses such as Biofluid Mechanics and Mathematical Analysis of Biological Systems.
- Education: B.S. in Applied Physics from Caltech (1982), B.A. in Physics from Occidental College (1982), M.S. (1985) and Ph.D. (1988) in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Northwestern University.
Dr. Gaver’s research focuses on the interplay between mechanical and physicochemical behaviors in biological systems, particularly the pulmonary system. His work includes studies on Marangoni convection, capillarity, viscous flows, and fluid-stress interactions relevant to pulmonary disorders. He also explores environmental influences on cellular mechanotransduction and bacterial migration through porous media.
His publications span fluid dynamics in pulmonary contexts, including bubble motion in channels, surfactant dynamics, and epithelial cell mechanics. Key journals include Journal of Fluid Mechanics and Journal of Applied Physiology.
- Scientific Awards: National Young Investigator Award (1993-1998), Provost’s Award for Research and Scholarly Excellence (2005), and multiple Teacher of the Year accolades at Tulane University.
