Donald Lyons is an Assistant Professor (Senior Research) at Oregon State University's Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences, with research interests in avian ecology, conservation biology, predator-prey dynamics, and ecological energetics. He mentors graduate students including Olivia Bailey, Adam Peck-Richardson, Scott Jennings, and Alexa Piggott.
His research focuses on bioenergetics-based predator-prey relationships, conservation of piscivorous waterbirds, and ecological decision-making processes. Current projects investigate habitat mapping using instrumented waterbirds, tern response to habitat loss, and conservation of endangered species like the Chinese Crested Tern.
Lyons has received multiple scientific awards including Best Student Paper at the Waterbird Society Annual Meeting (2005) and Oregon Chapter of The Wildlife Society (2000). His research is supported by grants from agencies including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Office of Naval Research, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
