معرفی
Donald Heistad is a Professor of Internal Medicine-Cardiovascular Medicine and Professor of Neuroscience and Pharmacology at the University of Iowa. His research focuses on vascular biology and pathophysiology, particularly in calcific aortic stenosis, atherosclerosis, hypertension, aging, and intracranial hemorrhage.
- Education: MD from the University of Chicago
- Current Positions: Professor of Internal Medicine-Cardiovascular Medicine and Neuroscience and Pharmacology
- Key Collaborations: Drs. Kristi Anseth and Leslie Leinwand (Boulder)
Dr. Heistad's lab has pioneered experimental models of aortic stenosis, including the first model of fibrotic stenosis without calcification, emphasizing oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction. His work bridges cardiovascular and neurological research, exploring mechanotransduction and molecular pathways.
Recent publications highlight his interdisciplinary approach, combining genetics, molecular imaging, and cell signaling in valvular disease. His lab's discoveries in X chromosome inactivation, BMP signaling, and TGFβ1 pathways provide novel insights into sex differences and fibrotic mechanisms in aortic valve pathology.
Over his career, Dr. Heistad has mentored 77 trainees, many of whom hold leadership roles in academia. He contributes to clinical translation through studies on PCSK-9 inhibition and ACE2 modulation for cardiovascular risk.
