Don Heider serves as Executive Director of the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University and holds the John Courtney Murray, S.J. University Professor of Social Ethics title with a tenured Full Professor appointment in the Department of Communication. He leads one of America's most active ethics centers, overseeing programs spanning business, government, journalism, technology, health care, leadership, and venture & equity ethics.
His research focuses on applied ethics in digital and professional contexts, particularly through pioneering work in digital journalism ethics and technology ethics. He has established frameworks for ethical decision-making across multiple sectors, with emphasis on emerging technological challenges in media and professional practice.
Heider's scholarly contributions include recognition through five Emmy awards earned during his television journalism career prior to academia. These awards highlight his foundational work in ethical media production.
In his leadership capacity, Heider manages over 14 full-time Center staff members and coordinates 75 affiliated faculty scholars university-wide. His strategic vision drives fundraising initiatives and program development that position the Center as a national resource for ethics consultation and education across professional disciplines.
