Don Garrett is a Silver Professor and Professor of Philosophy at New York University's Department of Philosophy within the College of Arts & Science. He holds a Ph.D. from Yale University. His research focuses on early modern philosophy, particularly metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of mind, and ethics, with special attention to Spinoza and Hume.
Garrett has authored influential works like Nature and Necessity in Spinoza’s Philosophy (2018) and Hume (2015), and edited The Cambridge Companion to Spinoza (1996). His career includes roles at Harvard, Johns Hopkins, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Kenan Distinguished Professor for Teaching Excellence.
His honors include the Carnegie Centenary Professorship (2011), American Academy of Arts and Sciences Fellowship (2009), and multiple fellowships from institutions like the University of Edinburgh and the Tanner Humanities Center.
