Dominik Kowald

Priv.-Doz. Dr. Dominik Kowald is Research Area Manager of the FAIR AI group at Know Center Research GmbH and Lecturer at Graz University of Technology. His research focuses on transparency, privacy, and fairness aspects of recommender systems, with expertise in differential privacy, popularity bias mitigation, and trustworthy AI evaluation frameworks. He completed his Habilitation in Applied Computer Science in 2024.

Research areas include:

• Differentially-private recommendation algorithms
• Popularity bias in music recommender systems
• Long-term fairness dynamics in algorithmic systems
• Multi-stakeholder recommender evaluation

Dr. Kowald has authored over 50 publications and received multiple awards including the Mind-the-Gap Gender and Diversity Award from TU Graz. He serves as Review Editor for Frontiers in Big Data and has secured numerous research grants from FFG and Horizon Europe.
