Prof. Dr. Dominik Fleitmann is a Full Professor in Quaternary Geology at the Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Basel, Switzerland. With a career spanning institutions such as the University of Reading and University of Bern, he specializes in paleoclimatic and environmental reconstructions using climate archives like speleothems, lacustrine sediments, and corals. His research focuses on understanding climatic and environmental processes across diverse timescales, from seasonal to glacial/interglacial cycles, through interdisciplinary collaborations.
- Education: Ph.D. in Geology (University of Bern, 2002), Diploma in Geology (University of Göttingen, 1997)
Research Interests center on Quaternary geology, paleoclimatology, and climate change, with fieldwork in Europe, the Middle East, and the Indian Ocean. He integrates geochemical, biological, and archaeological methodologies to analyze climate archives, contributing to global climate modeling and societal impact studies. His work often involves advanced dating techniques and multi-proxy reconstructions.
Scientific Awards include multiple Editor’s Choice recognitions in Science and international poster/experimental awards. He has directed major research centers like the Centre for Past Climate Change at Reading and served on advisory panels for climate risk analysis and funding bodies such as AHRC and DFG.
