Domenico Esposito is a Privatdozent (PD Dr.) and scientific staff member at the Institute of Classical Archaeology at Freie Universität Berlin, where he completed his Habilitation in 2024. Previously, he held research positions at the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin, Humboldt University, and served as a scientific advisor to the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei from 2000-2009. His extensive academic background includes a PhD from Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II (2005) with the dissertation 'La Pittura di Ercolano' and research experience at Tokyo University.
Esposito's research focuses on the archaeology of Pompeii and Herculaneum, with particular expertise in Roman wall painting, urban development, and the socio-economic aspects of ancient properties. His work examines the intricate relationship between architectural spaces, decorative programs, and social practices in the Vesuvian region. He has made significant contributions to understanding Pompeian construction dynamics, thermal architecture, and the evolution of domestic spaces over time. His research methodology combines traditional archaeological analysis with innovative approaches to material studies, particularly in pigment analysis and lighting reconstruction.
His recent publications reveal a strong focus on the thermal and convivial complex in insula IX 10 at Pompeii, Republican baths, and Pompeian pigments. These works demonstrate his interdisciplinary approach that bridges art history, material science, and social archaeology. His research often addresses how architectural spaces were used and transformed over time, revealing insights into Roman social practices and economic structures.
