معرفی
Dmitry Matyushov is a Professor of Physics and Chemistry at Arizona State University with appointments in both the Department of Physics and School of Molecular Sciences. He is also affiliated with the Center for Biological Physics at ASU. Joining the faculty in 2000, his career spans theoretical and computational research at the intersection of physics, chemistry, and biology.
Matyushov received his undergraduate degree in 1986 from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, followed by his Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from Kiev State University and the National Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in 1989. His postdoctoral work included a Lise Meitner fellowship from the Austrian Science Foundation and positions at Colorado State University and the University of Utah.
His research focuses on theoretical and computational approaches to condensed matter physics, physical chemistry, and biophysics. Key areas include protein dynamics and electrostatics, electron transfer in biological systems, dielectric response of polar liquids, and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. Matyushov's work bridges fundamental theoretical concepts with biological applications, particularly in understanding energy chains in biology, protein-water interfaces, and electro-elastic dynamics of proteins.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent focus on the interplay between electrostatics and molecular dynamics in biological systems. His work demonstrates growing emphasis on non-equilibrium phenomena, ergodicity breaking, and the thermodynamics of biological processes. The research spans from fundamental theoretical developments to applications in bioenergetics, particularly in photosynthesis and respiration mechanisms.
Matyushov has been supported by multiple NSF grants including 'Electron transport in energy production complexes of biology' (2015-2018) and 'Structure of water at interfaces with nanometer solutes and bioenergetics' (2012-2015). He has taught numerous courses including Physical Chemistry with Bio Focus, Intro to Research Techniques, and From Molecules to Cells.
His laboratory work combines computer simulations of realistic systems with the development of theoretical models applicable to experimental interpretation. The research group investigates energy transfer mechanisms in biological systems, with particular focus on how proteins harness electron transfer for biological function.
