Disa Helander is an Associate Professor at Umeå Centre for Gender Studies (UCGS), Umeå University. She teaches courses on Gender Studies A/B, Gender, Sex, Bodies, Feminist Theories, and Gender, Nation and Migration.
- PhD in Gender Studies
Her research focuses on:
- Migration control and border technologies
- Intersection of knowledge and power
- Family and sexuality studies
- Postcolonial and queer feminism
Recent publications analyze DNA testing in migration governance and digital safety spaces. She participates in the Health Humanities research group and leads the 2025 project TESTO on testosterone testing's role in gender identity diagnosis.
Research interests also include:
- State bureaucracy and inequality reproduction
- Scientific legitimacy constructions
- Resistant practices in administrative systems
