Dirk Zeller

Dirk Zeller is a Professor at The University of Western Australia, where he leads the Sea Around Us - Indian Ocean research group. He is affiliated with the School of Biological Sciences and the UWA Oceans Institute. His work focuses on global fisheries research, particularly in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, with significant international collaborations.

Dr. Zeller earned his PhD, BSc (Hons), and BSc from James Cook University in Australia, establishing his foundation in tropical marine biology and fisheries ecology. His academic journey has led him to become a prominent researcher in marine conservation and fisheries sustainability.

Professor Zeller's research spans multiple critical areas of fisheries science and marine conservation. He leads investigations into fisheries catch and effort data, illegal and unreported fishing, nutritional roles of fisheries, stock assessments, coral reef fisheries, ocean governance, historical ecology, and fisheries policy. His research philosophy differs from traditional approaches as his team primarily complements, harmonizes, and analyzes existing databases rather than collecting new field data, while also undertaking extensive gap-filling of datasets and historical research. This integrative approach addresses strategic questions supporting international conservation goals at global scales.

His recent publications reveal a growing emphasis on the critical intersection between fisheries, nutrition, and climate change. There's a clear trend toward micronutrient analysis of seafood, climate impacts on fisheries systems, satellite monitoring of fishing activities, international fisheries policy frameworks, and the socioeconomic dimensions of fisheries management. This evolution reflects the broader shift in fisheries science toward understanding the holistic impacts of fishing practices on both marine ecosystems and human societies.
