معرفی
Dirk Gebhardt is a full professor of photojournalism and social documentation at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Faculty of Design. With a career spanning over two decades, he has established himself as a prominent photojournalist and visual storyteller with a distinctive humanistic approach to documenting social conditions around the world.
His academic journey began when he joined Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts in 2011. Prior to his academic career, Gebhardt built an impressive portfolio working for international magazines such as Stern, DER SPIEGEL, DIE ZEIT, re:publica, and Time Magazine, as well as for NGOs like UNICEF and World Vision. His professional experience directly informs his teaching approach in the Photography department, where he instructs both BA and MA students.
Gebhardt's research interests focus on long-term international and national reporting, with particular attention to cultural lives of communities in South America, Africa, and Eastern Europe. His work often highlights topics that receive little media attention, such as changing living conditions in the Brazilian Sertão desert (documented in his photo essay 'The Dry Heart of Brazil' from 2012-2017) and social conditions across Germany (documented during the 25th year of German reunification).
His photographic essays demonstrate consistent engagement with social documentation, environmental challenges, cultural traditions, and political movements. Recent projects like the Georgian Student Protest (2024), Clean Nile (2023), and The Lions of Kharoum (2023) showcase his continued commitment to documenting important contemporary issues through the lens of human experience.
- Otto Steinert Prize from the German Society for Photography

- Extensive publication record including 'Quer durch Deutschland' (2017)
- 'Cuba – 90 años Fidel' (2016)
- 'Play Life - Nachbarn im westlichen Balkan' (2019)
As an educator, Gebhardt brings his extensive professional experience to the classroom, mentoring students in photojournalism and social documentation. His teaching emphasizes both technical skills and the ethical considerations of visual storytelling, drawing from his decades of experience working in diverse cultural contexts around the world. His academic position allows him to bridge professional practice with theoretical frameworks in visual communication and documentary photography.
