Dino Di Carlo is a Professor and Chair of the Bioengineering Department at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), with a joint appointment in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He holds the Armond and Elena Hairapetian Chair in Engineering and Medicine, directing the Di Carlo Laboratory focused on microfluidic technologies for biomedical applications. His leadership spans academic administration, cutting-edge research, and translational innovation.
Education:
- B.S., University of California, Berkeley (2002)
- Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley and San Francisco (2006)
- Postdoctoral Training with Professor Mehmet Toner, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital (2006-2008)
Research Interests: Professor Di Carlo pioneers interdisciplinary research in microfluidics, lab-on-a-particle systems, and single-cell analysis, with applications in diagnostics and cell therapies. His work integrates engineering precision with biological discovery to develop tools like handheld diagnostic platforms and nanovial assays for high-throughput cell screening.
Awards: His distinguished honors include:
- Presidential Early Career Award (PECASE, 2016)
- Pioneers of Miniaturization Prize (2015)
- NIH Director’s New Innovator Award (2010)
- Fellowships from AIMBE, IAMBE, and Royal Society of Chemistry
Laboratory Leadership: The Di Carlo Laboratory advances automation in biotechnology, exemplified by innovations such as ferrobot-enabled viral testing kits and secretion-based screening for cell therapies, frequently featured in major scientific media.
