Dina Francesca Haynes is the Executive Director of the Orville H. Schell, Jr. Center for International Human Rights at Yale Law School, where she also serves as a Lecturer in Law and Research Scholar. Her academic roles include teaching courses on human rights, refugee law, migration, and constitutional law. She holds a J.D. from the University of Cincinnati, an LL.M. from Georgetown University, and a B.A. in English Literature and International Studies from the University of Denver.
Haynes’ research focuses on migration, gender, transitional justice, and regressive governance. She has authored/co-authored three books (including the Oxford Handbook on Gender and Conflict) and over 30 law review articles. Her work spans interdisciplinary journals in law, political science, and human rights advocacy.
Her professional experience includes roles with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Afghanistan and Croatia, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Rwanda, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in Bosnia and Herzegovina. She has also served as a judicial clerk in the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Constitutional Court of South Africa.
Haynes engages in significant pro bono work, representing asylum seekers and challenging restrictive immigration policies through litigation. She advises governments on migration and human trafficking policies and has filed amicus briefs in U.S. appellate courts and international venues like the European Court of Human Rights.
Her scholarship emphasizes gendered dimensions of conflict, post-conflict reconstruction, and the intersection of law with humanitarian crises. She has pioneered frameworks for analyzing how regressive politics impact women and migrant communities globally.
